The Singapore Manufacturers' Federation (SMa), formerly known as the Singapore Manufacturers' Association, was first established in 1932. Its main aim is to champion manufacturing and the Singapore manufacturing sector. With a membership of over 2,600 corporate members ranging from MNCs to SMEs, SMa carries out a myriad of activities to enhance the competitive edge of our members.

Our Council

As a non-profit organisation, SMa is governed by a Council whose members hail from some of Singapore's most established and progressive companies. Through our strong links with the government, we are suitably qualified to represent our members objectively and to facilitate communication between the government, foreign delegates and the manufacturing community.

Our Industry Groupings

SMa members come from a spectrum of industries in the manufacturing or manufacturing-related sectors. To better understand and serve the diverse needs and interests of our members, they are categorised into 11 industry groups. The four key industry-centered activities include:

  • Enhancing business capabilities and networks
  • Representing industries' interests in Singapore and overseas
  • Sharing business information among the private and public sectors
  • Expanding market horizons through exhibitions, trade missions and fairs

The 11 industry groups are as follows:

1. Automation Technology
The Automation Technology (AT) Industry Group was formed in June 2000 to assist and benefit companies in the automation sector. Through partnerships and colaborations with the government and other key stakeholders, members are informed of the latest technologies and business opportunities.

2. Building Products and Construction Materials
The Building Products and Construction Materials (BPCM) Industry Group promotes the interests of members in the building and construction materials industry by informing on government legislation, enhancing networking opportunities and forming strategic alliances to help members achieve economies of scale.

3. Electrical, Electronics and Allied Industries
The Electrical, Electronics and Allied Industries (EEAI) Industry Group, as the largest IG due to the multifarious interests of its members, is divided into four Sub-Industry Groups (Sub-IGs). Each Sub-IG oversees the interests of its members in computing, telecommunications, IT, electrical and electronic products and industries supporting these businesses.

4. Fire Protection, Safety and Security
The Fire Protection, Safety and Security (FPSS) Industry Group helps members foster closer relationships with government agencies by drafting and reviewing safety standards, promoting best practices, conducting joint research and educating the public in fire safety, security and safety issues. Dialogues and seminars are staged to update members on the latest developments.

5. Food & Beverage
The Food and Beverage (F&B) Industry Group represents members on issues where collective representation is effective and desirable. It discusses key issues and provides vital information and networking opportunities for members in the F&B industry. It also promotes the local F&B retial industry and helps members regionalise and exploit new growth opportunities.

6. Life Sciences
As the fourth pillar of Singapore's manufacturing sector, the Life Sciences (LS) Industry Group promotes and facilitatesthe growth of the pharmaceutical industry in Singapore. It discusses and comments on regulatory issues affecting the pharmaceutical industry, and co-ordinates and undertakes studies to identify new products and market opportunities.

7. Lifestyle
The Lifestyle Industry Group (LFS) acts as the representative voice for the lifestyle industry, its suppliers and customers. It is also active in promoting the Singapore lifestyle industries and services, both locally and internationally, through trade missions and exhibitions, and networking sessions.

8. Medical Technology
The Medical Technology Industry Group (MTIG) comprises of leading MNCs and SMEs in the medical technology and supporting industries. It serves the industry and related organisations engaged in medical devices, equipment, instrument, diagnostics and implantables by providing a vital forum to advance the intersts of the industry, thereby benefiting its members.

9. Metal, Machinery and Engineering
The Metal, Machinery and Engineering (MME) Industry Group focuses its efforts on discussing alient issues, updating on market trends and providing networking opportunities to members via factory visits, talks by industry experts and social activities.

10. Plastics and Packaging
The Plastics and Packaging (P&P) Industry Group/ Packaging Council of Singapore acts as a catalyst of growth in the Singapore's packaging industry. It fosters co-operation between local and foreign packaging-related organisations, voices the industry's view on environmental issues, updates on the latest trends and promotes product quality, environmental protection and consumer satisfaction.

11. Oil & Gas and Related Industries
To represent and serve members in the growing Oil and Gas Industry, the Oil & Gas and Related Industries Industry group was recently established. This IG promotes and enhances the interests of Oil and Gas industry players in logistics, oil brokering, manufacturing and trading of petroleum products, industrial oils, greases and gases, drilling rig machinery & equipment and re-conditioning, repair & maintenance services.

Our Centres of Excellence

To supplement the activities and events staged to enhance members' knowledge and expertise, SMa also operates five Centres of Excellence to impart specific skills and competencies to members. These centres are:

1) eSCM Council
The e-Supply Chain Management's (eSCM) Assessment Programme promotes IT and e-Supply Chain best practices in the community. The programme was launched in October 2002 to increase the competitiveness of companies and to establish Singapore as the key Collaborative Manufacturing Services Hub in Asia. The Singapore eSCM Council provides the vision and direction for the Programme, and the SMa Secretariat operates and manages this Programme.


2) GS1 Singapore Council
The GS1 Singapore Council's role encompasses the provision of article numbering and technical assistance. It also conducts educational and publicity activities on the application of EAN.UCC bar code systems to the industry. Its role has been expanded to include the promotion and use of radio frequency identification tags (RFID) and the operation of the Singapore Cold Chain Centre.


3) Enterprise Development Centre (EDC@SMa)

EDC@SMa was established in 2005 to help local SMEs set up their businesses, troubleshoot problems and upgrade their capabilities. The EDC@SMa boasts a full-equipped resource centre with in-house consultants who will help budding entrepreneurs set up their businesses, provide advice on securing incentives and assistance from various government agencies. EDC's consultants also provide Focus Consulting to help SMEs on specific projects to streamline their operations, develop their business or conduct specific research to enhance their competitiveness.


4) SMa School of Management (SOM)

Established in 2004, SMa School of Management is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SMa. It has a network of over 12 overseas university and corporate training partners and awards more than 40 professional certifications and academic qualifications from US, European and Australian universities. It offers certificates, diplomas and degrees in 11 disciplines spanning Business Administration to Psychology to Information Security and Intelligence.


5) SMa Centre for Corporate Learning

The SMa Centre for Corporate Learning (CCL) conducts more than 400 seminars, workshops and conferences and trains more than 6,500 people annually. Formerly known as the SMa Training Institute, CCL has been conducting corporate training and sharing cutting-edge knowledge since 1966 on a broad spectrum of subjects such as Leadership, Occupational Safety & Health, Security & Risk Management, Quality Management, Logistics & Supply Chain Management, Radio Frequency Identification and Developing New Markets.
