The Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF)’s Packaging Council of Singapore (PCS) Industry Group held its first virtual Singapore Packaging Star Awards (SPSA) ceremony on 6 October 2021

The Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF)’s Packaging Council of Singapore (PCS) Industry Group held its first virtual Singapore Packaging Star Awards (SPSA) ceremony on 6 October 2021, with close to a hundred attendees witnessing the efforts of these winners. This year is also the first time the awards ceremony incorporated a conference in the event. Industry experts share their insights on informative topics such as using the latest innovative materials to reduce plastics in packaging.

Welcome Address by Ms Betty Tan

Ms Betty Tan, Chairperson of the SMF’s PCS Industry said during her welcome address, “PCS aim to instil the importance of packaging concept and technology as well as to promote awareness on the importance of packaging functionality in terms of consumer needs and impact of the health and environment.”

As the awards ceremony went on a hiatus last year, this year awards winners from 2019 and 2020. In total, 51 award-winning packaging designs from companies and students of local Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL) were awarded the SPSA awards in this awards ceremony.

Opening speech by Mr Douglas Foo

Mr Douglas Foo, President of the SMF, said during his opening speech, “Our task, however, is not yet complete. We must continue to instil in our youths the importance of packaging and the usage of sustainable materials before the time comes for us to pass the torch to them.

Mr Luke Goh, CEO of the National Environmental Agency

Mr Luke Goh, CEO of the National Environmental Agency, concluded during his address, “We also use packaging to inform customers about product quality, to market the product, to branding. At the same time, packaging all types of materials have an environmental footprint which is why we have the effort everyone put in.”

One such winner is Magna International Pte Ltd. The company’s Vappro VBCI 826 Soluplast–biodegradable Anti-Corrosion Packaging film received the SPSA, Asiastar and Worldstar awards. Besides that, the winning design was also honoured with the Worldstar Awards 2020 President’s Awards (Gold), the highest accolades by Worldstar Awards.  The Vappro VBCI 826 Soluplast–biodegradable Anti-Corrosion Packaging film is an anti-corrosion, non-toxic, water-soluble plastic packaging film that intends to replace non-biodegradable polyethene anti-corrosion film.
