The Singapore Manufacturing Federation (SMF)’s Packaging Council of Singapore (PCS) Industry Group held its first virtual Singapore Packaging Star Awards (SPSA) ceremony on 6 October 2021, with close to a hundred attendees witnessing the efforts of these winners. This year is also the first time the awards ceremony incorporated a conference in the event. Industry experts share their insights on informative topics such as using the latest innovative materials to reduce plastics in packaging.
As the awards ceremony went on a hiatus last year, this year awards winners from 2019 and 2020. In total, 51 award-winning packaging designs from companies and students of local Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL) were awarded the SPSA awards in this awards ceremony.
One such winner is Magna International Pte Ltd. The company’s Vappro VBCI 826 Soluplast–biodegradable Anti-Corrosion Packaging film received the SPSA, Asiastar and Worldstar awards. Besides that, the winning design was also honoured with the Worldstar Awards 2020 President’s Awards (Gold), the highest accolades by Worldstar Awards. The Vappro VBCI 826 Soluplast–biodegradable Anti-Corrosion Packaging film is an anti-corrosion, non-toxic, water-soluble plastic packaging film that intends to replace non-biodegradable polyethene anti-corrosion film. It is dissolvable in water, thus eliminating plastic pollution in the oceans, addressing corrosion issues while protecting the environment.
This year’s awards ceremony also saw that 18 of the 51 awardees were students from various IHLs recognised for their packaging design. 9 out of the 18 students represented Singapore at the regional level, winning the AsiaStar Awards in the process.
The SPSA is a prestigious national award that honours companies with innovative and creative packaging designs for their products. It recognises and rewards excellence in packaging designs in the areas of construction and materials usage, design, innovative technology and environmental consciousness. This award has five categories: Commercial Sales & Display; Commercial Environmentally Sustainable Packaging; Commercial Transportation & Protection; Student Sales & Display; and, Student Environmentally Sustainable Packaging. Winners of the SPSA will be eligible to compete in the AsiaStar Awards and Worldstar Awards, giving them the chance to receive regional and international acclaim.
